About Silicone Lip Injections

Silicone injections were popular in the 1960s as a treatment for facial wrinkles. It was banned for cosmetic purposes in 1992 in the USA because the ineffective injectable material produced horrific facial deformities.

In 1997, silicone injections were re-introduced for soft-tissue applications such as filling the lips, cheeks, wrinkles, furrows, and acne scars.

When silicone is injected into the lips, over time, the body produces new fibrous collagen which wraps itself around the silicone droplets. This is how the silicone-injected lips gradually get enlarged.

Silicone lip injections are now known to induce lip deformities within 2 to 4 years. They thicken and harden the lips like rubber which causes patients to bite their lips constantly. A way to correct the deformity is to surgically cut out big sections of the lips. It is a nightmare to remove the liquid silicone from the lips, doctors say. Not an easy task! Patients were left looking worse than what they originally had.

Other complications: Chronic skin edema and inflamed nodules the size of capers.

Trivia: Silicone injections are illegal in the U.S., but some people are still getting illegal injections from unqualified professionals using silicone sold at hardware stores. Why? They are cheap and some people do not know about the dangers of liquid silicone injections.
